MEMPHIS, Tenn. - FOX13 obtained video showing a garbage truck taking out trolley lines and light poles early Thursday morning in Downtown Memphis.

The video shows that the incident happened just after 1:10 a.m. on the 500 block of Main Street. Shortly after, a car and two Memphis Police vehicles run over the debris and head in the opposite direction.

“I think it’s bad because the city is going to have to pay to fix it and it probably could have been avoided," said Downtown Memphis resident Jenn Ahmed.

Officers arrived to the scene to find trash debris, powerlines, two light poles and glass on the ground, MPD said. A tenant at a nearby apartment told investigators that she heard "a loud boom" before running up to her window to see a garbage truck driving past the downtown fire station.

“I think people need to slow down and just be cautious and a little bit more aware of what’s going on...This is unbelievable, I cannot believe this even happened," said Madelyn Smith who manages the store Feelin Memphis in Downtown Memphis.

MPD said the garbage truck snagged several power lines and snapped two light poles in half. The driver of that garbage truck left the scene, but eventually went to the MPD Traffic Office and admitted to causing the damage. Police said he left the rear of the trash truck up. He was ticketed for failure to maintain safe lookout.
